Former teacher faces trial for sex charges

The former school teacher charged with performing oral sex on a nine-year-old boy has claimed trial.

The 37-year-old man, who appeared in court on Wednesday without a lawyer, faces 11 charges, including seven for molesting two other boys, who were nine-years-old and 11-years-old. The teacher cannot be named to protect the identity of the boys, of whom two are now 11 and the other, 13.

This man allegedly performed oral sex on one nine-year-old on four occasions at the male staff toilet and in a computer laboratory at the school located in eastern Singapore between 10 and 17 July 2009.

In May that same year, the teacher, who is single,  allegedly rubbed a nine-year-old’s thigh and made inappropriate physical contact with him on three occasions – twice in the lab and once in a classroom. The teacher is also accused of tickling an 11-year-old while having his hand down his shorts on four occasions between March and July the same year.

He is currently out on bail, but if convicted of molesting a child under 14-years-old, he can be jailed up to five years, fined, caned or receive any combination of these punishments for each charge. The maximum punishment for sexual penetration involving a minor below 14 is 20 years in prison, with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane for each charge.
